Poker is a card game that has been played for centuries. The name is thought to derive from French poque, or primero, which was a kind of vying game played in the early Middle Ages. To play a standard game of poker, players are dealt five cards face down. They must match a previous bet or fold. This is known as bluffing. Bluffing distinguishes poker from other vying games that are based on rankings of hand strength. In some games, a player can also make a forced bet. These bets can be a blind bet or an ante.
At the beginning of each betting interval, the first bettor must bet a minimum amount. Once all of the other players have checked or folded, the next bettor can raise or call. After the last bettor has called or raised, a showdown occurs. The winner takes the pot and the hand is revealed. Generally, the highest-ranking hand is a pair or higher. If no two hands have matching pairs, then the second-highest card is valued. In a three-card brag game, the player who makes the first bet is called the “braker”. This person is also responsible for the deal of the cards, which is generally passed from player to player. Depending on the game, a player who makes the first bet can either call or raise.
